Why the Brain Starts Looking for the Next Error After Just One Mistake

One mistake rarely remains just one. Not because an athlete suddenly forgets how to perform the movement or loses their technique within a few seconds. After an unexpected error, attention changes. You fire a poor shot, concede a touch, send the ball to the right, disrupt the release, throw a dart too low, or miss an easy ball. The attempt is already over, but internally it continues. As you return to your position, you are no longer thinking only about the next action. You are thinking about preventing the previous mistake from happening again. From that moment, you are no longer simply performing the movement. You are checking whether the same thing is about to happen again.

Before the mistake, everything may have been going smoothly. You saw the target, felt the movement, maintained your usual rhythm, and did not try to control every detail separately because there was no reason to. Then something happened, and the brain immediately started searching for a cause, moving from one question to another. Why did the shot go wide? Why did I concede that touch? Why did the arrow slip? Why did the ball go right again? Why did I miss an easy ball?

This is the brain’s attempt to protect you from repeating the mistake. It begins reacting to every possible change. The sights seem too unstable. The trigger finger feels unfamiliar. The arm feels heavy. The distance from the opponent looks wrong. The swing no longer feels confident. The wrist feels tense. The selected line stops feeling reliable. All of these sensations may have been present before, but previously you were performing the action. Now you are observing yourself, comparing current sensations with previous attempts, and trying to identify the exact moment when something changed.

After one poor action, an athlete rarely thinks, “That was one mistake.” A much more common thought is, “Here we go.”

One wide shot becomes the beginning of a bad series. One conceded touch feels like the loss of distance awareness. One poor golf shot makes you believe that your movement has disappeared for the day. One disrupted release feels like the collapse of your entire technique. One missed ball creates doubt about your whole game. Only one mistake has occurred, but the brain has already turned it into a prediction.

Now the next attempt is no longer only about producing a result. You are checking whether you can still shoot, score, attack, throw, or execute your stroke. That makes the next attempt far too important.

In shooting, it looks like this. You produce several normal shots, and then an unexpected flyer appears. On the next shot, you watch the sights more closely, wait for a steadier sight picture, become more aware of your trigger finger, and try to apply pressure more carefully. The thought appears: “The main thing is not to jerk the trigger.”

But the more attention you direct towards the finger, the less naturally it works. The sights continue to move. You wait for the right moment. Time passes, tension increases, and so does the desire to produce a perfect shot. At some point, you either complete the shot abruptly or hold for too long and still fire from a poor state. The first flyer may have been accidental. The second appeared because your attention shifted from executing the shot to preventing the previous error at any cost.

In archery, one arrow unexpectedly goes wide, and during the next shot your attention shifts towards the release. You monitor the wrist, check the shoulder position, control the elbow, try to maintain the draw, and think about the movement of the arm after release. What was previously performed as one complete action breaks apart into separate tasks.

Raise the bow. Draw. Check the position. Hold. Do not collapse. Do not release too early.

You are no longer performing your familiar shot. You are trying to rebuild it while the movement is already happening. The rhythm changes, caution appears, and the next arrow also goes off line. At that moment, the athlete is more likely to lose trust in the movement than to lose the technique itself.

In fencing, the process is less visible, but the mechanism remains the same. You concede an unexpected touch, and during the next exchange you are already waiting for it to happen again. Your opponent has not done anything yet, but part of your attention remains inside the previous attack. You react too early to a movement of the torso, respond to a feint, change the distance too quickly, or delay your own attack because you want to be certain that the moment is right.

You may concede another touch, not because your opponent repeated the same action, but because you are still defending yourself against the previous exchange.

In golf, the ball goes right after one poor shot. Before the next attempt, you want to correct everything, so you start checking your grip, head position, shoulder movement, body rotation, and club path. You perform several practice swings and try to feel that everything is under control again.

But instead of a free swing, you begin constantly checking the technique. The swing becomes cautious and the movement loses its integrity. The body is no longer performing a familiar action. It is waiting for confirmation that the mistake will not happen again. The ball may go right again, or it may travel in a completely different direction because the movement has already changed. Sometimes it is not the swing that falls apart. It is your trust in it.

In darts, one dart unexpectedly lands low, and before the next throw the thought appears: “Just do not release it too early.” You become more aware of your fingers, lock the wrist, hold the arm in position for longer, and try to make the throw as carefully as possible.

But you cannot carefully place a dart into the target. You have to throw it. When a free movement becomes cautious, the release changes. The arm starts to slow down, the fingers hold the dart for longer, and it misses the target again. It feels as though you have lost your throw, even though the problem began when you started constantly checking it.

In billiards, after missing an easy ball, you stop trusting the first line you selected. You check it again, change your body position, return to the original position, take more practice strokes, control your wrist, and remain over the ball for longer. The decision has already been made, but you continue trying to convince yourself that it is correct.

While attention is occupied with checking, the cue movement becomes less free, and the next stroke is also inaccurate. One ordinary mistake begins to look like the complete loss of your game.

After an error, you want to regain a sense of safety. It seems that the way to do this is to become more attentive, slower, and more precise, and to start controlling every part of the action. But in precision sports, many movements are already deeply familiar to the body. You have performed them hundreds or thousands of times.

They work not because you consciously control the shoulder, wrist, finger, legs, breathing, and vision during every attempt, but because all of these components have already been connected into one coordinated action. When you begin consciously checking every detail, that action breaks apart. The rhythm slows down, muscles engage too early, and the movement becomes rigid. You are trying to help yourself, but you interfere with something that was working without constant control before the mistake occurred.

After an error, the brain starts collecting evidence that its prediction is correct. If you are afraid of jerking the trigger again, you notice every sign of tension in the finger. If you are afraid of disrupting the release, you monitor every movement of the wrist. If you do not want to concede another touch, you react to the slightest signal from your opponent. If you are afraid of sending the ball right again, you build the entire movement around avoiding that danger. If you do not want to miss another easy ball, you begin to doubt even the most obvious line.

Normal sensations become suspicious. A small movement of the sights feels like a loss of stability. Functional muscle tension is interpreted as stiffness. Normal competition nerves become evidence that you are not coping, even though the next error has not happened yet.

The advice to “forget it and move on” does not help. You cannot order the brain to forget an event that it considers significant. When you tell yourself, “Do not think about the miss,” you still have to remember the miss to check whether you are thinking about it. The phrase “Do not jerk the trigger” keeps jerking at the centre of attention. The phrase “Do not concede another touch” keeps the previous attack in your mind. The phrase “Do not send the ball right” makes you imagine that direction in advance.

The goal is not to force yourself to forget the previous attempt. The more useful task is to stop using it as an instruction for the next one.

At that moment, you do not need to rebuild your entire technique urgently. First, separate what actually happened from what the brain has already predicted.

“This shot went left” does not mean that the next one will also go left.

“I conceded this touch” does not mean that I have lost my sense of distance.

“This shot went right” does not mean that I am incapable of playing well today.

“This arrow had a poor release” does not mean that my technique has disappeared.

“I missed this ball” does not mean that I can no longer see the line.

Name the fact without evaluating it, then return your attention to one familiar task. Not to fighting the mistake, checking yourself, or urgently trying to prove that you can still perform. For one athlete, that task will be maintaining rhythm. For another, it will be continuing the movement. For someone else, it will be managing distance, allowing a free swing, or calmly executing a decision that has already been made.

Sometimes this is enough to stop the chain. But if every mistake makes you rush, delay the action, consciously control the technique, lose trust in the movement, or expect the next miss in advance, one cue will not solve the problem.

This mechanism develops differently in every athlete. One athlete speeds up and tries to recover the result immediately. Another waits for the perfect moment. A third checks every technical detail. A fourth stops making decisions. A fifth becomes angry and performs the next attempt from a completely different state.

You need to understand what you notice first, where your attention goes, what changes in the body, when unnecessary control appears, and why trust in the movement gradually disappears.

This is what I work on individually with athletes. We examine not only the mistake itself, but everything that happens after it and begins to influence the actions that follow. The first mistake rarely destroys a performance. More often, the performance is destroyed by the attempt to prevent the next one at any cost.

The next mistake has not happened yet. But sometimes the athlete starts performing it in advance.
