Why the Brain Starts Looking for the Next Error After Just One Mistake
One mistake rarely remains just one. Not because an athlete loses their technique within a few seconds. After an unexpected error, attention changes. You fire a poor shot, disrupt the release, concede a touch, send the ball off line, throw a dart too low, or miss an easy ball. The attempt is already over, but internally it continues. You return to the next action thinking, “I just hope I do not do that again.” From that moment, you are no longer simply performing the movement. You are checking whether the mistake is about to happen again.
In para sport, this reaction can be stronger because the cause of the error is not always obvious. The support position may have changed. Pain may have increased. Spasticity may have appeared. Fatigue may have developed sooner than expected. The hand may no longer feel pressure in the same way. The trunk may be holding a different position. Breathing may have changed. Equipment may have shifted slightly. Sometimes the athlete notices the change immediately. At other times, they see only the result and do not understand what happened. The brain then starts searching for an explanation, and before every new attempt, attention returns more frequently to the body.
Before the mistake, everything may have been going well. You saw the target, felt the movement, and maintained your usual rhythm. Then one shot went wide, one arrow had a poor release, or one stroke was inaccurate, and attention immediately shifted from the action to the body. Is my trunk in the correct position? Has the spasticity increased? Has my support shifted? Is my arm holding in the same way? Has my grip become weaker? Is the pain starting? Is my leg shaking? Has my breathing changed? This kind of control may feel necessary, but the more you check your body during the action, the less attention remains for the action itself.
After one mistake, the thought “Here we go” appears. One flyer becomes a sign that the body will not cope today. One disrupted release makes you think that the arm is no longer responding. One conceded touch feels like evidence that maintaining distance has become more difficult. One poor stroke creates the feeling that fatigue has already become too strong. Only one error has occurred, but the brain quickly turns it into a prediction and starts expecting the physical state to deteriorate.
In para shooting, it may look like this. Several shots go well, then an unexpected flyer appears. You do not understand what changed. Muscle tone may have increased slightly, the support position may have shifted, the body may have become tired, or maintaining the position may have become more difficult. On the next shot, you start checking everything at once. You watch the sights more closely, wait for a steadier sight picture, and monitor the trigger finger, pressure against the support, shoulder position, and breathing. You try to determine whether the body is interfering. The longer this checking continues, the more tension increases. The shot takes longer, the movement becomes cautious, and the trigger finger loses its familiar rhythm. The first flyer may have appeared because of a small change in physical condition. The second appears because you tried to control that condition completely.
In para archery, one arrow goes off line, and during the next shot your attention starts moving around the entire body. Is my trunk positioned correctly? Has the position of my pelvis changed? Do I have enough support? Has the spasticity increased? Is the shoulder working in the same way? Has my wrist become weaker? Will the release be normal? One complete movement is replaced by multiple checks. You try to maintain your position, control the draw, preserve balance, and finish the movement correctly at the same time. The rhythm changes, the release becomes cautious, and the arrow may go off line again. At that moment, the athlete may decide that the body has stopped responding, even though part of the problem is already being created by constant checking.
In wheelchair fencing, after conceding a touch, you may start thinking not only about your opponent but also about whether your body will manage the required action. Will I be fast enough? Will my balance change? Will my working side let me down? Will there be a delay in the movement? During the next exchange, you react earlier because you are not confident that you will have enough time later. Or you delay the attack while waiting for a more convenient moment. Your opponent has not done anything yet, but part of your attention is already occupied with checking your own physical capacity. This changes timing and distance. You may concede another touch not because you were physically unable to respond, but because you started expecting that inability too early.
In para golf, one stroke may change because of fatigue, balance, restricted mobility, or a different pattern of trunk movement. The ball goes right, and before the next attempt, you start focusing on your grip, body position, support, trunk rotation, and club movement. If the body is already tired, you may try to control the technique even more closely to compensate. But the swing becomes cautious, the movement loses its integrity, and attention remains fixed on the limitation. The ball may go off line again. Sometimes the problem is not that the body can no longer perform the stroke. The problem is that the athlete stops trusting the version of the movement that is available to them today.
In para darts, after one inaccurate throw, you may start monitoring the wrist and fingers more closely. If sensation changes or the arm becomes tired more quickly, every difference starts to feel dangerous. You hold the arm in position for longer, stabilise the wrist more firmly, and try to release the dart carefully. But the more cautious the throw becomes, the more the release changes. The arm starts slowing down, the fingers hold the dart for longer, and it goes off target again. It feels as though the arm has stopped working, even though it was capable of producing the throw before you started controlling every millimetre of it.
In para billiards, after missing an easy ball, you may decide that your seated position, support, trunk position, or arm movement has changed. Before the next shot, you check the line again, adjust the wheelchair or chair, change the height of your trunk, and monitor your grip and cue movement. The decision has already been made, but you continue searching for a more reliable position. The longer this checking continues, the less freedom remains in the movement. The cue moves more rigidly, and another error appears. One miss begins to look like evidence that your body will not allow you to play accurately today.
In para sport, it is easy to confuse a real change in physical condition with the fear of that change. Pain can genuinely increase. Fatigue can influence movement. Spasticity, sensation, balance, and breathing can change during a single performance. These changes cannot be ignored. But after one mistake, the brain starts checking them constantly, even when no further change has occurred. The athlete is then working not only with the body but also with the expectation that the body is about to let them down.
This creates excessive control. You want to monitor every part of the movement more closely because automatic execution no longer feels trustworthy. But adapted movement is also built through repetition. The body knows the way of performing the action that is available to it. This movement may differ from that of another athlete and may change depending on pain, muscle tone, or fatigue, but it can still remain stable. When conscious control starts interfering with every detail, the movement breaks apart. The rhythm slows, muscles engage too early, breathing changes, and the body receives too many instructions.
After an error, the brain starts collecting evidence. If you fear an increase in spasticity, you notice every sign of tension. If you are afraid that the arm is becoming tired, you start checking it after every action. If you fear losing support, all your attention remains fixed on your trunk position. If you expect pain, you start searching for it before it has actually increased. Normal sensations become suspicious. Functional tension is interpreted as the beginning of a problem. A small change in position feels like a loss of control. Nervousness becomes evidence that the body is already failing.
The advice to “ignore it” does not work either. You cannot ignore the body in para sport, but you also cannot treat every sensation as a warning signal. You need to distinguish between what has actually changed and what the brain has started searching for after the error. This is difficult because the sensations are real. The tension is real. The fatigue is real. The fear of repetition is also real. But not every sensation means that the next attempt will necessarily be poor.
After a mistake, you do not need to correct everything immediately. First, name only the fact. This shot went left. This arrow had a poor release. I conceded this touch. This stroke was inaccurate. Do not immediately add, “My body can no longer maintain the position,” “My arm has stopped working,” “The spasticity has ruined everything,” “I am already too tired,” or “It will only get worse now.” One attempt does not explain your entire physical condition.
Then determine whether a real change has occurred and whether it requires an adjustment. You may need to correct the support position, change your posture, take a pause, restore your breathing, or account for the pain. But if there has been no real change, do not turn the next attempt into a complete examination of your body. Return your attention to one familiar task: rhythm, continuation of the movement, the line, distance, or the calm execution of a decision that has already been made.
Sometimes this is enough to stop the chain. But if every error makes you fear your own body, check every sensation, lose trust in the movement available to you, or expect your condition to deteriorate, one cue is no longer enough. This mechanism develops differently in every para athlete. One starts protecting the movement too much. Another forces the body to work through tension. A third controls every detail. A fourth ignores fatigue until the movement completely breaks down. A fifth decides after one mistake that their physical condition will no longer allow them to continue normally.
You need to understand what is genuinely changing in the body and what is being added by the expectation of another error. At what moment does attention leave the action? How do pain, fatigue, spasticity, or changes in support affect the decision? When does adaptation help, and when does it turn into excessive control? Why does one inaccurate action make you stop trusting a movement that was working only a few minutes earlier?
This is what I work on individually with athletes. We do not ignore the characteristics of the body or try to force an athlete to perform as though those characteristics do not exist. We examine how physical condition, attention, and performance pressure begin to influence one another and what starts the chain of errors that follows. The body can genuinely change the conditions in which an action is performed. But after one mistake, the body is not the only thing that changes. Attention changes as well. Learning to distinguish between the two is essential.
